Hi all,
There had been quite a bit of discussion of having alternate names for
'Mozilla Firefox' the browser and the term 'browser' as well.
Am CCing Sam as he is into designing and creativity, so he might be able
to provide some more pointers to us.
The single reason why 'Mozilla Firefox' not is that the license under
which MPL (Mozilla Public License) operates simply states that if you
change the branding, change anything you can't anymore call it Firefox.
Also there are many functionalities in the browser itself that we would
be looking at taking out (and probably might use the debian iceweasel
package as a base to start to do that) and even strip more if needed.
So in both or in either of the cases we would need to change the
branding anyway to make it hamara and in doing so, we would need to have
a new name.
So if we have to have a new name, what name should it have ?
What it should not be :-
a. It should not be long name
b. It should not be a generic name
c. It should not be an inanimate name
d. No abstract terms as well.
What it could have or needs to have -
a. It could be short
b. It could have a name which can be translated into few languages
c. The name should evoke an image
d. We should be able to design a mascot around it
Some terms which have been shared so far :-
librekingkid/Raju shared 'bharari' - which apparently means to take a jump.
mandiv/mangesh shared agniyan - I *think* the name might be copyrighted,
but if not could be a good one . It is easy to understand the term, it
is short and we should be able to design a logo and a mascot around it.
'Agniyan' literally means 'fireship' or 'fire vehicle' . We could have a
mascot called 'Agniyan' who zooms from Mahajaal to Mahajaal (that is
what Internet is called in Hindi and Internet or Interweb is webs of web)
A play on it was shared by shared by Akshat as 'Prakashvaeg' which
literally means 'lightspeed' which again could be turned into a mascot
and a logo as well, although it might be more difficult than the one
above to depict.
People were tired and hence couldn't talk much more and an idea was
shared that we could even take some term from Sanskrit . The benefit of
having a term in Sanskrit is if it's not long we could get the same
name/term in many an Indian languages and the names would not differ
much as most Indian languages are based on Sanskrit.
Look forward to more ideas on the same, if something jump-starts, just
reply here.
