Dear Sam,

I would ask if you are able to share some sample documents so we could 
also have a look at that. Also which evince version are/were you using ?

For e.g. mine is

[$] evince --version
 

GNOME Document Viewer 3.18.1

If you have document or documents that you could share publicly, maybe 
you can make some using the famous Lorem Ipsum and just do some random 
commenting so we could take a look from both the angles/ways and see if 
we can improve the situation or not overall.

I am open to testing and even putting the bug upstream (if it's there) 
provided you can share some sample documents for the same and also share 
how you went about preparing the document/s both under Acrobat as well 
as under Evince.

I atleast would try to duplicate your issue at my end and if I get the 
same issue, would post it and follow it up to its logical conclusion.
