This thread kicked of a big debate between me and my wife (she is
british). In particular around the use of the word "updation".
My point was that "Indian English" is a language of it's own like
"American English" and so does not have to conform to the rules of
"British English". I also argued that languages evolve over time and
distance and so if sufficient people use a word, it is valid. That
approach is taken when adding new words to, for example, The Oxford
Dictionary.
I don't think we should in any way modify an existing dictionary - but
should there be an "Indian English" dictionary? If people use the words
all the time - then should there software suggest that those words are
incorrectly spelt?
In the end I was unable to convince her about "updation" - regardless of
my argument that the number of people who use it makes it a valid word -
she is adamant that the word should not break the rules of the language.
As for the Indian English dictionary - I guess we need more views on how
useful people would find it?
