OpenVPN is one of the easier ways to do this. You need one machine to 
act as you VPN server - that machine needs to be addressable by all
VPN clients - so a static ip would be the best way. If that machine 
resides on your home network, it needs to be accessible from outside.

Then machines such as your PI can be VPN clients - who should be able to 
speak to each other when connected to your VPN.
